Le catch, qu'on appelle aussi lutte professionnelle au Canada et professional wrestling dans les pays anglophones, est un sport-spectacle d'origine américaine qui se déroule sur un ring et qui peut être vu comme un lointain dérivé du pugilat ou de la lutte gréco-romaine, mais qui en diffère énormément dans le sens où les combats sont ici scénarisés. En effet, l'issue de chaque rencontre est déterminée à l'avance par des bookers (c'est-à-dire scénaristes).

Le terme catch ("attraper" en français) peut être considéré comme un faux anglicisme car dérivé de l'ancienne expression anglaise catch-as-catch-can (en français « attrape-le comme tu peux »

► Règles des matchs :
Les règles d'un match de catch sont utilisées pour simuler la compétition, désigner un vainqueur mais surtout pour enrichir l'histoire d'un match. Par exemple, un catcheur pris dans une prise de soumission peut donner l'illusion au public qu'il va abandonner puis attraper la corde pour appliquer la règle du rope break et obliger son adversaire à casser la prise.

► Style de combat :
De différents styles de combat sont fixés pour chaque catcheurs et catcheuses. Voici quelques différents style de combat:

* Brawler (le bagarreur): Personne qui passe son temps à utiliser des coups de poing, de pied, de tête, de coude, de genou... et effectue peu de prises, notamment Stone Cold Steve Austin ou Finlay.
* Hardcore (l'hardcore): Personne qui catche de façon hardcore, comme Mick Foley ou bien The Sandman.
* High-Flyer (le voltigeur): Personne utilisant beaucoup de techniques aériennes de catch, la plupart des ces personnes sont des cruiserweights (poids moyens). On peut citer des exemples comme Rob Van Dam, Rey Mysterio ou Jeff Hardy.
* Powerhouse (le locomotive): Personne soulevant ses adversaires en l'air pour les projeter avec des prises puissantes. Ce sont en majorité les catcheurs de très grande taille et/ou très lourds et/ou très puissants: Kane, The Undertaker, Goldberg, The Great Khali, Brock Lesnar, Mark Henry, Umaga, The Big Show, Big Daddy V ou Batista.
* Submission artist (l'artiste de la soumission): Personne experte en prises de soumission. Kurt Angle, Bret Hart, Chris Benoit, Ric Flair et Chris Jericho sont des exemples de catcheurs spécialisés dans la soumission.
* Technical (le technicien): Personne connaissant à peu près tous les différents techniques de catch (prises, attaques, prises de soumission et techniques aériennes) et qui contre-attaque souvent son adversaire. Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, Kurt Angle, Al Snow, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Triple H... sont des techniciens.
* Dirty (le pourri): Personne qui triche et essaie de gagner un match de toutes les manières possibles. Les tricheurs les plus connus sont Ric Flair, Edge ou alors Randy Orton.
* Show Man: Personne qui provoque souvent et qui fait réagir le public pendant le combat: Stone Cold Steve Austin
