Le ninjutsu — du japonais nin, furtivité, persévérance, patience, endurance et jutsu, technique — est l'art des ninja, ces guerriers-espion du Japon féodal que la tradition représente vêtus de tuniques sombres et d'une cagoule. De nos jours le ninjutsu est souvent assimilé au Bujinkan et a ses derivés (Jinenkan, Genbukan) qui comportent les enseignements de neuf écoles, chacune spécialisée dans un domaine bien précis et dont seulement trois se réclament du ninjutsu (gyokushin ryu, togakure ryu et kumogakure ryu). Ces écoles sont actuellement sous la responsabilité de Masaaki Hatsumi, qui vit à Tokyo et a plus de 70 ans.

► Les 18 disciplines Ninja - Ninja Juhakkei :
D'après les membres du Bujinkan, les 18 disciplines ninja ont d'abord été décrites sur les parchemins de Togakure-ryū, et elles devinrent par la suite communes à toutes les écoles de Ninjutsu.

D'après le Bujinkan, le Ninja Juhakkei était souvent étudié en même temps que le Bugei Juhappan (les 18 disciplines de combats des Samuraïs). Même si certaines de ces disciplines sont les mêmes, leur techniques respectives sont utilisées différemment chez les Samuraïs et les Ninja.

Les 18 disciplines sont :
1. Seishin-teki kyōyō (spiritualité)
2. Taijutsu (combat sans arme)
3. Kenjutsu (combat à l'épée)
4. Bōjutsu (combat au Bō ou baton long)
5. Shurikenjutsu (combat au Shuriken)
6. Sōjutsu (combat à la lance)
7. Naginatajutsu (combat au Naginata)
8. Kusarigamajutsu (combat au Kusarigama)
9. Kayakujutsu (explosifs et pyrotechnique)
10. Hensōjutsu (déguisement et camouflage animal)
11. Shinobi-iri (technique de vol et d'effraction)
12. Bajutsu (technique équestre)
13. Sui-ren (technique aquatique)
14. Bōryaku (stratégie militaire)
15. Chōhō (espionnage)
16. Intonjutsu (technique d'évasion)
17. Tenmon (météorologie et projection astrale)
18. Chi-mon (géographie)

► Techniques de combat :
Le bujinkan regroupe différentes techniques de combat :

* koppô taijutsu : combat à mains nues utilisant les connaissances du squelette pour mieux blesser ou maîtriser l'adversaire ;
* ninpô no ken : escrime, dont la pratique du sabre long (daïto) et du sabre court (kodachi) ;
* shinobi kenjutsu : la maîtrise du sabre ninto ;
* yari jutsu, so jutsu : combat à la lance ;
* shuriken jutsu : lancer d'objets, tranchants (couteaux) ou pas, dont le lancer de la senban (senban nage jutsu), la fameuse étoile à pointes ;
* kajutsu, kayaku jutsu : utilisation du feu (incendie, explosifs, armes à feu) ;
* bisentô jutsu, naginatajutsu : combat à la hallebarde ;
* kisha jutsu : combat et tir à l'arc à cheval ;
* fukiya jutsu : sarbacane ;
* jojutsu, bôjutsu, hambô jutsu, rokushaku bo jutsu : combat au bâton ;
* suiton jutsu : Nage de combat ;
* shime jutsu : Etranglement ;
* shoten jutsu : Escalade et techniques pour "monter aux cieux"
* onshin jutsu : l'art de se déguiser et de devenir invisible ;
