Le Sambo (du russe : Самбо, une contraction de самозащита без оружия, samozaschita bez oroujiïa, littéralement « auto-défense sans armes ») est un sport de combat créé en URSS dans les années 1930 mélangeant principalement le judo et la lutte.

Le terme de sambo est une abréviation russe signifiant « self-défense sans arme » (самозащита без оружия, samozachtchita bez oroujiya). Cette technique de combat est mise au point par Vasilii Sergeevich Oshchepkov, qui fut l'un des pionniers du judo soviétique dans les années 1920. Le sambo est vite repris par les militaires mais reste toujours une discipline sportive. Ce sport de combat est aujourd'hui géré au niveau mondial par une fédération internationale, la Fédération internationale amateur de Sambo (FIAS), localisée à Moscou. La première compétition se déroule en URSS le 16 novembre 1938 à l'occasion d'un tournoi de lutte sur proposition de Anatolii Kharlampiev, longtemps décrit comme le père du sambo. Le premier championnat d'URSS se tient en 1939.

Les techniques de sambo sont très nombreuses (plus de 5 000 prises !) mais entrent dans deux grandes catégories : les projections et les immobilisations. Il est rare que les combats de six minutes qui se pratiquent en compétition arrivent à leur terme. L'un des deux combattants parvient en effet généralement à prendre l'avantage sur son adversaire.

Les combats se disputent sur des tapis de lutte sous le contrôle d'un arbitre, d'un juge et d'un chef de tapis. Les samboïstes sont vêtus d'une veste étroite, appelé « Kourka », rouge ou bleu fermée par une ceinture de couleur identique (la ceinture noire est aussi acceptée) . Un short moulant (bleu ou rouge selon la veste), appelé « Trousi », et des chaussures de cuir souple complètent l'équipement des combattants.

Le sambo se divise en trois formes de pratiques qui possèdent toutes leurs compétitions propres.

* Sambo sportif
* Sambo de combat (percussions autorisées pieds poings ; protège-dents, coquille, protège-tibias et gants sont alors de rigueur)
* Sambo de défense (technique de défense mélangeant toutes les techniques de sports de combats existants ; se pratique en pantalon ayant la couleur de la veste à la place du short)

Parmi les pratiquants célèbres de sambo, il convient de signaler Vladimir Poutine, Oleg Taktarov, Fedor Emelianenko et son frère Aleksander Emelianenko.

Le sambo est candidat au statut de sport olympique.

En France, il faut noter que seul l'Institut Français de Sambo est reconnu par la Fédération Internationale Amateur de Sambo.
